The amount private insurers pay for several health care services—such as office and emergency department visits as well as hip replacements—in the US fluctuates substantially by area of the country and type of procedure, according to an analysis of data from Humana, a large private national insurer that covers about 1 million people with commercial insurance.

More children seek care for mental health disorders today than a decade ago, researchers have shown. During that time, the proportion of pediatric visits to the emergency department (ED) for mental health symptoms increased relative to visits related to other health concerns. Now, a report by the National Center for Health Statistics quantifies the characteristics of children who tended to seek care in the ED for mental health concerns using data from more than 1 million visits between 2018 and 2021.
