People who had severe COVID-19 might experience long-lasting, detrimental changes in the innate immune system, a small study in Cell suggests. Researchers observed epigenetic changes in blood-forming stem cells in participants with COVID-19 who required intubation and mechanical ventilation compared with healthy participants and those who experienced other severe illnesses. The changes ultimately resulted in higher levels of inflammatory molecules known as cytokines, the study involving 57 participants found.

Continuing a years-long upward trend, the proportion of US adults aged 35 to 50 years who reported binge drinking reached a “historic” high in 2022, with almost a third of people stating that they had consumed 5 or more drinks in a row in the past 2 weeks. Use of other substances, such as marijuana and hallucinogens, also increased among midlife adults compared with previous years, according to a National Institute on Drug Abuse report that included survey responses from 5450 people.

Partial resistance to the antimalaria drug artemisinin has increased across Uganda in recent years, according to surveillance results from multiple sites across the country between 2016 and 2022. In the majority of sites surveyed, more than 20% of Plasmodium falciparum parasites exhibited signs of resistance, defined as slow clearance of the organism from a person’s body after treatment.
